When it comes to treating nonmelanoma skin cancer—like basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma—there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. At our practice, Dr. Angelo Mancuso, offers two trusted treatment paths: Mohs surgery and Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) using the GentleCure process.

Both options are backed by clinical research and used by dermatologists across the country. The best choice depends on your specific diagnosis, location of the cancer, medical history, and personal preference.

Mohs Surgery:

  • A surgical procedure that removes the skin cancer layer by layer under a microscope
  • Typically performed in-office with local anesthesia
  • Offers immediate results and high cure rate

Image-Guided SRT (GentleCure):

  • A non-surgical treatment that uses low-energy X-rays to target the cancer site
  • Offers immediate results and high cure rate
  • Ultrasound imaging is used at each visit to monitor treatment progress
  • No cutting, no stitches, no scarring
  • Ideal for patients who are not candidates for surgery or prefer a gentler, non-invasive option
  • Covered by Medicare and most insurance

Actual SRT Imaging

Dr. Mancuso offers a non-invasive treatment for nonmelanoma skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

This treatment is called Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) — a safe, effective alternative to Mohs or traditional surgery.

It works by delivering low-energy X-rays directly to the cancer site, guided by real-time ultrasound imaging that helps ensure accuracy with each session. There are no incisions, no stitches, and minimal disruption to your daily life.

Important: This treatment is not appropriate for melanoma.

We track your treatment progress at every visit.

Our Board Certified RTT uses the Image-Guided Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) machine to deliver doses of low energy X-rays to the cancer spot, killing the skin cancer cells while preserving the healthy tissue and cells around it.

GentleCure is the only skin cancer treatment that uses ultrasound images so you can see your skin cancer shrink at each visit until it is cured. These images help your RTT and dermatologist tailor each treatment to work exactly for your cancer.

Mohs Surgery for Skin Cancer Treatment

What Is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs micrographic surgery is a specialized surgical technique used to treat nonmelanoma skin cancers, particularly basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. It is considered the gold standard for removing certain skin cancers, especially those located in sensitive or high-visibility areas such as the face, ears, nose, scalp, and hands. The goal of Mohs surgery is to completely remove the cancer while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible—making it ideal for cosmetically or functionally important areas.

How the Mohs Process Works

Unlike traditional excision methods, Mohs surgery is performed in stages, all in one visit:

    1. Local anesthesia is used to numb the treatment area.
    2. Dr. Mancuso removes a thin layer of visible cancerous tissue.
    3. The tissue is immediately examined under a microscope in an on-site lab.
    4. If cancer cells are still present at the edges (“margins”), the process is repeated only in those areas.
    5. Once all margins are clear, the site is closed or allowed to heal naturally, depending on its location and size.

This process may be repeated several times in one visit until the cancer is fully removed—giving Mohs its reputation for precision and high cure rates for basal cell carcinoma of 98% and 96% to 98% squamous cell carcinoma.

Dr. Mancuso’s Experience with Mohs

With over 40 years of clinical experience in dermatologic surgery, Dr. Angelo Mancuso, brings skill, precision, and a steady hand to every Mohs procedure. Patients trust him not only for his surgical expertise, but also for his ability to explain each step clearly and ensure comfort throughout the process.

Is Mohs Surgery Right for You?

Dr. Mancuso will evaluate your specific diagnosis, location of the lesion, overall health, and treatment history to determine if Mohs surgery is the most appropriate option. In some cases, non-surgical alternatives like Image-Guided SRT like GentleCure may also be considered.
